An introduction to the Independent Reporter

There is a Volkswagen ad that says "If you're really good in your last life, you get to come back as something better". That, in a nutshell, is the story of the Independent Reporter.
The Independent Reporter is the child of a lot of caring parents. It is the result of my desire, as Editor, to break through the limits of the old Alberta Free Press, which I published for 5 years. It is the result of Grant Neufeld's wish to see, and be involved in, a truly effective independent news publication. Lastly, it is the result of the support encouragement, and commitment to an open and democratic press of such people as Gordon Christie, Pam Parry, Gerald Wheatley, volunteer writers, volunteer distributors, and financial supporters.
The Alberta Free Press, which ceased existence as this first issue of the Independent Reporter rolled off the press, was the prototype. It taught us what we could expect from government, industry and commerce. As Editor, I learned the ropes, so to speak, of navigating a paper with no budget, no permanent staff, and few friends. Now, fitted out with better rigging and a seasoned crew, the Independent Reporter takes her place.
You will recognize the reporting, the editorial style and our stubborn refusal to compromise content. I think you will be pleased with the additions and improvements as well: our own website at:

a weekly e-mail version in html format; weekly, and when issues are hot even daily, update of the web site; an on-line archive, and a web based news wire carrying the stories and perspectives the main stream media just seems to misplace.
I think we have come back as something better, we hope you agree.
