Member of the Counter Petroleum Congress Communications Committee
Calgary--The petroleum industry has a long history of questionable practices. From involvement in human rights abuses and mistreatment of labour, to a myriad range of environmental damage and destruction.
This June, Calgary will be hosting the World Petroleum Congress, a gathering of industry executives and technical specialists.
At the same time, Calgary will be host to a diverse range of activists seeking to challenge the industry's continued unethical practices. Representatives of social justice, labour, religious and environmental organizations will be here to challenge the acceptance of "business as usual" where that business tramples on people and the environment.
Events already being planned include a conference on energy alternatives (solar, wind, etc.), public lectures on the issues, street rallies and protests, and "critical mass" rides featuring large numbers of cyclists (and roller-bladers, pedestrians, wheelchairs, baby-strollers,...) taking over the roads in challenge to petroleum powered vehicles.
As a major centre of the petroleum industry, we in Calgary have a responsibility to ensure that the industry operates in an ethically and morally responsible manner, and be prepared to raise our voices in challenge when it doesn't.
